Focuses on Strengthening Local Economy and Independent Businesses during Uncertain National Economic Downturn

In an effort to keep the local economy strong and ensure that Historic Downtown Summerville thrives during the challenging national economic times, Summerville D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) has several initiatives in place. Summerville D.R.E.A.M. has identified several programs to help strengthen local businesses, keep independent business owners competitive, and draw customers into the shopping district with special events.

The organization has promoted a “Shop Local, Support Your Community” campaign with the marketing of its gift certificates, which can be used in member businesses, and brought educational resources downtown by way of additional classes and meetings for merchants. Marketing the district has become top priority with statewide advertising including print, outdoor and broadcast media as well as through social networking efforts such as Facebook, MySpace and BlogSpot. Excitement has been built downtown with hometown events such as HollyFest, Saturdays with Santa and the Summerville Christmas Parade in addition to Holiday Open Houses and extended hours.

Summerville D.R.E.A.M., which leads a volunteer-driven, preservation-based economic development program, is part of a national network of communities using the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s proven Main Street Approach™ to commercial district revitalization. The National Trust Main Street Center released in December results of a national poll of revitalizing communities that surveyed the local impacts of the national economic downturn. Of the 261 respondents, the Center learned that Main Street communities are holding strong despite gloomy economic forecasts:
33% say business owners have lower sales than this time last year;
27% say development projects have stalled;
24% say one or more businesses have closed;
21% say no significant business closings, reduction in sales, stoppage of major developments have occurred;
9% have seen new businesses open; and
7% have experienced a thriving local economy.

The work of organizations like Summerville D.R.E.A.M., which are focused on keeping their historic or traditional downtowns or neighborhood business districts strong, is more important than ever. Main Street programs throughout the nation are reporting that in order to soften the hardships of the challenging economy that they are ramping up business assistance and promotions to keep the commercial district in the minds of consumers. The survey found that 62 percent of respondents have been producing additional or bigger special events and retail promotions, 32 percent have coordinated advertising or joint marketing programs, 29 percent have focused on building media coverage, 28 percent have launched shop-local campaigns, and 20 percent have been offering business assistance and training programs.

“We are taking this economic downturn seriously and are working with the town and partners to deliver services and produce events,” says Kate McCaw, president of the Summerville D.R.E.A.M. Board of Directors. “We urge area residents to consider patronizing Downtown Summerville’s businesses first to keep local dollars local and to keep our community vibrant.”

Summerville D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) agency.

Summerville D.R.E.A.M. is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Summerville by enhancing the aesthetic, cultural, social and economic aspects of the downtown area while preserving its historic identity.

LeGrand said D.R.E.A.M.’s assessment will help determine if the group’s programs are successful and what could be done to improve them.

“What kind of resources can we promote to bring it to the next level?” LeGrand said. “It needs a new set of eyes.”

Main Street South Carolina offers design assistance, development programs and assessments of downtown areas that are members of the Main Street Program. There are 11 downtowns in South Carolina that participate in the program, and cities and towns must apply to become members. LeGrand said Summerville’s assessment is a routine stop.

“It’s regular maintenance. A check-in,” said Randy Wilson, an architect that contracts out with Main Street South Carolina and one of the team members assessing the area.

In order to complete the assessment of Summerville, representatives will take a tour of the area and speak with a cross-section of town and county officials, administrators, business owners and residents about the downtown area.

“We’re asking (people) how well they are using the historic preservation, design principles.”
Wilson added, “We’re not just talking to people who love D.R.E.A.M.; we’re talking to naysayers and people on the fence.”

People interviewed will include members of the town planning department, board of architectural review and council members.

“Historically, Summerville has had a strong program,” Wilson said. He has worked in Summerville before, helping design some of the building facades on Short Central Street downtown.

The review of Summerville and D.R.E.A.M. has been in the works for close to six months, Wilson said. The group just reviewed Beaufort’s downtown area and made recommendations.
“We like to leave practical, prioritized recommendations,” Wilson said.

Main Street South Carolina will present a list of recommendations in about a month. The entire assessment will cost about $7,000 and will be paid for by Main Street South Carolina.

Wilson said the goal is to assess Summerville’s downtown area using four benchmarks: Design, organization, promotion and economic restructuring.

At the very least, “The place has to look nice, promote historic assets, the right business mix,” Wilson said.

At first glance, Wilson said it looks as if Summerville’s downtown is progressing as it should.
“Downtown looks fantastic,” Wilson said. “Too bad all of Summerville doesn’t look like downtown.”

For more information about the Main Street South Carolina program, visit www.masc.org.

State and National Experts to Assess Downtown Summerville

Downtown revitalization experts from Main Street South Carolina and the National Trust Main Street Center will visit Summerville on July 30 to August 1 to assess the downtown area's greatest challenges and opportunities and to recommend a course of action for Summerville D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management). Assessment Team Leaders, Beppie LeGrand, from Main Street South Carolina, and Nick Kalogeresis, from the National Trust Main Street Center, will arrive in Summerville on Wednesday evening to begin two days of interviews, tours and meetings. At the end of the two days, they will meet with community leaders to present their observations and to propose a course of action to strengthen the downtown revitalization efforts.

“The Assessment will provide us with an objective analysis of the downtown's biggest needs,” according to Kate McCaw, president of Summerville D.R.E.A.M. Board of Directors. “Main Street South Carolina and The National Trust Main Street Center have worked with over 1,900 towns and cities, including many here in South Carolina. Together, they have a wealth of experience to share with us. We are hoping that the Assessment will help us determine the strategies we should pursue and what specific actions we should take to revitalize the downtown area.”

The Assessment will focus on the downtown's greatest needs and will give leaders of Summerville D.R.E.A.M. an achievable list of activities to strengthen the downtown's economy and make the best possible use of its historic and traditional commercial buildings.

“A community's downtown is one of the most important parts of its economy,” said Beppie LeGrand. “It is also the community's most public place, a place that truly belongs to everyone and that reflects the community's evolution and vision. A healthy downtown is a sign of a healthy community.”

Main Street South Carolina is a program of the Municipal Association of South Carolina and has worked with various communities in all parts of the state to implement the Main Street Approach through strong local programs. In addition to assisting communities with the formation of their Main Street Program, Main Street South Carolina strives to bring value added incentives to participating communities that promote economic growth and capacity building successes. The National Trust Main Street Center, a program of the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation, has helped over 1,900 communities throughout the United States revitalize their downtowns. To date, communities participating in the Main Street program have generated over $31.5 billion in new downtown investment, with a net gain of over 331,417 new jobs and 72,387 new businesses.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Main Street Center's impressive record of accomplishment in helping communities create new jobs and attract investment makes the Main Street program one of the most successful economic development programs in the nation. In addition to offering on-site downtown revitalization assistance to communities, the National Trust Main Street Center publishes training materials, offers workshops and conferences, conducts research on critical commercial revitalization issues, sponsors the only professional downtown management certification program, and provides national advocacy. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Street Center's parent organization, was chartered by Congress in 1949. A nonprofit organization with more than 200,000 members, the National Trust has seven regional offices, owns 26 historic house museums and works with thousands of local community groups in all 50 states.

Summerville D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Summerville by enhancing the aesthetic, cultural, social and economic aspects of the Historic Downtown district while preserving its historic identity. Affiliated with Main Street SC (MASC) and the National Main Street Association, Summerville D.R.E.A.M. works to enhance community identity and pride by providing “hometown” events, assisting businesses with design improvements, building tourism and marketing Historic Downtown Summerville to residents and guests. The winning entry was made by Stephen Deal of Ladson, who named his hot dog "The Patriot," and smothered it in tomatoes (red), sour cream (white), bleu cheese (blue) and avocado (green).

Summerville DREAM (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) and P-Dogs restaurant at 119 West Doty Ave. sponsored the hot dog naming contest. The winner was announced at the July 4 "Red, White and Blue on the Green Festival," attended by thousands and sponsored by DREAM.

Many of the two dozen recipes entered in the contest had patriotic or holiday themes, and names like "Firecracker" submitted by Donna Gaines; and the "Betsy Ross Dog," created by Diana Esser, Jami Sheppard, executive director of DREAM said.

There was the "Yankee Doodle Doggie," submitted by Caroline Edwards, who topped her dog with spicy mustard and sauerkraut. "Mr. Gruber's Sweet Corn Dog," offered by Annette Plexico, is based on ingredients found at the Summerville Farmers Market.

"The Red, White and Blue Dog," created by Alan Greer, called for a hot dog covered in blue cheese coleslaw and topped with a drizzle of sweet barbecue sauce. "Blackbeard's Beast," envisioned by Maria Edwards, comes with mayo, coleslaw and crushed pepper, and is served with a fork and knife.

"It's a Wrap," submitted by Nancy Bacher, utilizes a lettuce leaf, thin tomato slices, onion slivers and crumbled blue cheese all rolled up around the hot dog.

Linda MacBay of Moncks Corner offered the "South of the Mason Dixon Line Bratdawg, which features a sweet Italian brat covered in Vidalia or yellow onions, caramelized; shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses; a combo of mayonnaise, mustard (yellow or spicy), garlic powder, garlic salt and black pepper.

Then there was the "The Freedom Dog" _ "It's red, white and up-to-you," Sheppard said.
Perry Cuda, owner of P-Dogs restaurant, said several hot dog entries sported the official colors of the July 4 event, but Deal's dog was the best of the bunch.

"He used the whole red, white, blue and green theme, like a few others, but we ultimately thought it was the best combination," Cuda said.

He said the winning hot dog will be featured on the P-Dogs menu.

For more information about DREAM, call 843-821-7260 or visit http://www.summervilledream.org/.

Top dog gains menu spot

http://www.journalscene.com/news/0708NEhotdog

A top dog was named in the official Summerville Fourth of July Hotdog Contest for the Red, White and Blue on the Green Festival held on Friday, July 4.

The winner was announced at the event on Friday.

Two-dozen recipes were received for the competition. P-Dogs is located at 119 West Doty Avenue.

Patriotic Pets shine on the Fourth of July

http://www.journalscene.com/news/0708NEjuly4pets

By Sharon Gnau
Summerville Journal Scene

Dressed to impress, hot dogs of every shape and size went nose to nose, competing for the coveted “Most Patriotic Pet” title during this year’s Red, White and Blue on the Green celebration.

Paws on pavement weren’t the only things sizzling as the primping pooches strutted their patriotic stuff while wearing themed ensembles.

Some, like Stasia the miniature pinscher went for pure Americana, dressed as an all-American hot dog topped with spicy mustard. Other fashion savvy canines like Beli, an old English bulldog opted for an edgy, eclectic take on Fourth of July fashion, boldly mixing orange goggles with red, white and blue stripes.

There for moral support were other pooches on the sidelines, giving their furry friends their own time to shine. Whitley, a bassett hound of a certain age participated in the Bassett Waddle over the Holidays, but opted to sit out this event.

When all was said and done, Sally the sandy-haired cockapoo won the day and the title of “Most Patriotic Pet” with her flattering spin on a Betsy Ross look. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) on Friday, July 4.

The event included games and activities for all ages, live contests, patriotic face painting, music by the Howle Brothers, jump castles and tons of food at the All-American concessions stand.
Children slid down an inflatable slide and had Americana shapes airbrushed into their hair. Big eaters devoured hotdogs and watermelon in eating contests, while parents and their kids soaked each other to the bone in the balloon toss.

Local policemen came out on their time off to volunteer at the dunking booth. Egging on parents with jokes about giving out tickets made the dunking booth one of the biggest draws at the festival.

“One of the officers finally had to leave and go back to work,” said Jami Sheppard, executive director for D.R.E.A.M. “He just climbed out of the booth and went, soaking wet, to go direct traffic.”

Old-fashioned games rounded out the fun for the children.

Prizes were awarded to the winners of the non-motorized parade in the categories of Most Patriotic, Most Original and Most Patriotic Pet. The panel of judges was comprised of Kate McCaw, president of Summerville D.R.E.A.M., Tony Islan, president of the Summerville Community Orchestra Guild and Diane Frankenbergerer, owner of People, Places and Quilts and a founding member of Summerville D.R.E.A.M.

Over 150 children along with their parents participated in the parade, led by the Dorchester County Honor Guard and the Grand Marshal Mayor Berlin G. Myers escorted by Fire Chief Marc Melfi.

From the sparkling parade costumes to the red, white and blue decorations and American flags, the event celebrating our nation’s birthday was about coming together with family and friends on our nation’s most important day. But the day also served as a reminder of why people choose to live in Summerville. With its warm, family-friendly atmosphere and the hometown feeling in its downtown and events, it’s a place people want to call home.

“There was a couple whot came with their three-year-old son. They had moved to West Ashley from China two years ago and they were having a great time immersing themselves in American culture. Their son was thrilled to receive an American flag to wave in the parade,” said Chris McLaughlin, a volunteer at the event.

The festival, like so many others held in small towns all over the country, served as a great example of what makes this country special.

“Looking at all the faces, some of them freshly painted with fireworks and American flags, I was truly proud of the work that we did for our town, for the people of our town and for our visitors. For me, it was truly American and really what living in this nation is all about,” said Katie DePoppe, event chair.

Event sponsors included First National Bank of SC, Palmetto Wellness Center, Guerin’s Pharmacy and Carolina Golf Cart Rental. The winner was announced at the event on Friday.

The two dozen recipes were received for the contest ranged anywhere from recipes that played on Summerville called “De Ville” and “Mr. Gruber’s Sweet Corn Dog” based ingredients found at the Summerville Farmer’s Market to recipes with a patriotic flair such as the “Firecracker” and the “Betsy Ross Dog.”

But the winning recipe was one that played on all four colors of the festival: Red, White, Blue and Green. A big check.

It doesn’t get more American than the old-fashioned Red, White and Blue on the Green festival, a fourth of July celebration set for Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Summerville Town Square.

From tried-and-true events like the non-motorized parade led by Mayor Berlin G. The dunking booth is set to have local police officers as the “celebrities” to dunk.

Ever wonder what to put on a hot dog to make it even more American? The winning recipe of the Fourth of July hotdog contest will be announced at the event. The hot dog will be featured on the menu of local hot dog eatery P-Dogs.

Participants are also encouraged to be part of the festival by entering their decorated wagons, carriages, roller blades, bicycles and tricycles in the non-motorized parade.

“We do a real, full day of family fun,” Sheppard said.

Prizes will be awarded for most patriotic and most original non-motorized display along with a prize for most patriotic pet.

Most of the activities are free of charge or come with small fees, which benefit Summerville D.R.E.A.M.

“A lot of heart and volunteer work went into this,” Sheppard said.

The event will be capped off with a free fireworks display at Gahagan Sports Complex at 515 West Boundary St.

“It could really rival any fireworks show in the nation,” Sheppard said.

The public is encouraged to bring a beach blanket and lawn chairs but not coolers or alcoholic beverages.

“It’s a very old-fashioned event,” Sheppard said. “A lot of the people have called and said, ‘I came to this in elementary school and now I’m bringing my (younger relatives).”

For a full schedule with times and locations of events, see Friday’s Journal Scene.

Reach Jenny Peterson at JPeterson@journalscene.com or 873-9424 ext. 216

Summerville's big Fourth

http://www.charleston.net/news/2008/jul/02/summervilles_big_fourth46175/

Hot dogs, parade and fireworks offered

By Edward C.
